Zack opened his eyes when he felt her face bury into his shoulder. He huffed in a gathering breath and turned to look at her—what he could see of her. A curtain of light caramel hair covered most of her face, along with his shoulder, but a little patch of creased forehead told of her screwed up eyes.
She wasn’t going to block him out again. Zack did not sleep with women he didn’t like. Just as important as arousal was the aftermath. It bothered him that bonding with Skylar after their first time had not been an option. That was not going to happen tonight, especially with so much riding on it.
“Hey, you.” He blew on her hair, sending a section rising sharply and then flopping down. “Wake up.”
She screwed her face up harder and rubbed her nose on his skin. “Not asleep.”
Zack eased over onto his side so he was facing her. “Don’t you go all shy on me again.” Reaching out, he brushed the hair off her face. “Wasn’t so bad, was it?”
An expulsion of air escaped her nostrils and she shook her head. He leaned toward her and dropped a kiss on her nose.
“Was it—different?” she asked, finally looking at him. “With the bulge and all?”
Too right, it was. An amazing, magical feeling making love to a woman growing big with his child—either that, or the lack of a rubber, a rare occurrence over the years.
“Different? Yeah, it was special.” He brought his hand down between them and laid it on her belly, feeling a rush of emotion. “More of a connection because of what’s in here.”
That’s what he’d missed since Rhianne, the tenderness. And it wasn’t just tonight, because of the baby lying between them. Their first night together had also given him that feeling, though he’d supposed at the time that was because he’d been her first. Virginity was a gift and carried responsibility, in Zack’s mind.
“But physically?”
“Physically, it was great. What’s worrying you?”
“Just that, because of the baby, you feel you have to be gentle. Would you normally be gentle?”
Zack considered. “There’s a place for gentleness, just like there’s a place for fun and intensity and sometimes just out-and-out hot sex.” He tilted her face up to his and brushed her lips with his own. “It’s all good, Skylar, as long as you’re both on the same wavelength at the same time.”
She squirmed a little under his gaze. “But what if, when I’m not pregnant anymore, you don’t feel the same connection?”
Zack smiled at her reference to a future for them. At least she was entertaining the thought. “I already had the connection. I have had for months.”
Her mouth twisted. “Really?”
Zack bristled at the note of skepticism in her tone. “I don’t make promises I won’t keep, Skylar. I wanted you before, I want you now, and I see no reason not to keep wanting you.”
She looked away, but he gripped her chin firmly, forcing her to look back.
“Where does this insecurity, this lack of self-esteem come from?”
No response, which was going to get her exactly nowhere, Zack decided.
